Forms of Abstractions
In the later works on paper of the world famous Abstract Expressionist Sam Francis (1923-94) the mandalas, painted in bright colors, which are very condensed, are in a door shape or in a kind of triangles. These shapes mean the subconscious entrance to the cosmos. The white canvas is the void in the sense of possibilities and the infinity of the possibility.
Sam’s son Augustus Francis, (lives in Lancashire and London, UK, Los Angeles, CA and Venice, Italy), is searching for ways to express Abstract Expressionism within meditative surface compositions with reduced forms in combination with a well-deliberated selection of intense colors. The artist is strongly inspired by natural and urban landscapes in a kind of an environment in which the viewer can get lost and will experience the artist’s intention of transferring nature into abstraction.
